Retinal degeneration, or it is also called dystrophy, is a deformation of the retinal cells of the visual organs. There are two types of dystrophy in total: central and peripheral. Macular dystrophy (central) is characterized by detachment of retinal cells due to fluid coming from the eye vessels, with the formation of edema and macula. The second type of retinal degeneration is asymptomatic, and this is the main danger.

If the central part of the retina is damaged, symptoms such as difficulty reading texts, blurring of objects and details, the appearance of spots and blurred vision are provoked. There is an increase in eye pressure. It is very difficult to identify this type at an early stage since the process is asymptomatic.

If you do not consult a specialist in time, then in the case of central retinal degeneration, serious complications appear that cause a chronic form of the disease. This form will be characterized by irreversible gradual deterioration of vision and irreversible damage to the retina. The next type of dystrophy – peripheral – in the later stages causes numerous dark spots in the process of vision and a decrease in the radius of lateral vision. Peripheral dystrophy in the late stages almost completely affects the vitreous, retina and vascular membrane, can cause their pathology or even loss of vision.

As a preventive measure for this diagnosis, it is necessary to periodically conduct examinations with an ophthalmologist. If the disease has begun to progress, then there is no special cure for it. It is possible to slow down the course of the disease and prevent its transition to later stages, for this it is necessary to take vitamins of groups E and C, lutein, zinc and copper. In the complicated form of dystrophy, treatment is carried out with the help of anti-VEGF drugs, preventive injections, laser coagulation.
